Spine: November 11, 2009 written by Marini Barika Facey Eyes right! Heads sharply pivot and salute. Left, right, left stomp shiny boots. Corey suddenly darts straight up in his bed, and wipes the sweat from his head. His room is swallowed by licorice painted darkness and brushed in startling silence. Green blood-shot eyes, in exhaustion stare, as Corey's racing mind shifts into full gear. Parade rest, his soul desperately waits to hear, but his frantic mind races into double time. Left, right, left stomp shiny boots. Attention! Men halt and stand erect like oaks with deep roots. Green blood-shot eyes frighteningly stare as Corey's racing memories shift into full gear. His mind is swallowed by the darkness his past has painted and brushed with violence. Gusts of memories rush through his mind, and their knuckles knock against his soul silently. It's as if Corey's spine has violently snapped, and he is trapped inside a paralyzed man's body. | Sacred: November 11, 2009 written by Marini Barika Facey Mahogany faces are painted with spellbinding colors Embers are taken from flames and tribes are given names Faces and bodies are carved and crimson runs down scars Bamboo rattles, drums pound, and unearth the ground Voices chant and wake the silence and bury violence Melted gold is stirred and brilliant vermilion is crushed Fabric and cloth are tossed into colorful dyes and pressed Radiance and wisdom brightly shine between eyebrows Bracelets wildly shake on henna painted feet and hands Vows tied to a fast, let eyes gaze at the moon through mesh Branches sprinkle water across the forehead and chest Oil flows and rushes down the hair, head, and neck Wine is poured out onto the ground as a libation Dream catchers trap evil in a web when hung overhead Heaven opens and that which is sacred rains down on earth |
